Milton Mills, MD presents on the MicroBiome

As part of the Rochester Lifestyle Medicine Lecture Series and Rochester Area Vegan Society, on September 26, 2021, Milton Mills, MD presented to a live (and virtual) audience on the Microbiome in Rochester, NY.

Mills is a physician who has worked with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine to redress racial inequities in dietary recommendations. Dr. Mills is an intensivist (critical care/ICU) physician, actively practicing in the Washington, DC area. He speaks on a wide variety of topics, including the microbiome, the connection between diet and cancer, human anatomical adaptation to plant-based diet, and what the Bible has to say about diet, as well as connections between the civil rights movement and veganism. RLMI features Carla Hightower, MD, MBA on Food Cravings

Dr. Carla Hightower is a certified integrative health coach, workplace wellness consultant, and founder of Living Health Works. She provides wellness workshops and online courses to teach adults how to create healthy lifestyles with plant-based nutrition so that they can heal themselves, have more energy, and lead productive lives.

In her prior career, Hightower practiced anesthesiology for 21 years and observed that unhealthy food was responsible for most of the preventable, chronic diseases affecting her patients. Personally, she was inspired to become a health coach after overcoming her own prediabetes with plant-based nutrition and lifestyle changes.

Dr. Hightower joined RLMI’s Dr. Ted Barnett and Dr. Susan Friedman for a webinar presentation on Sunday June 13, 2021.

RLMI features Ginny Messina, RD, MPH on Plant-Based Diets and Bone Health

Registered dietitian Virginia Messina writes about plant-based diet for both consumers and health professionals, and serves on the advisory boards of One Step for Animals, Vegetarian Resource Group, and True Health Initiative. She has published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, co-authored a textbook on vegetarian nutrition, and twice co-authored the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics position paper on Vegetarian Diets.

On her website,, Ms. Messina says: “I devote my career to giving people the tools and knowledge they need to adopt a healthy vegan diet and to ensure that they will stay healthy and happy for the long term.” She also contributes to and helps maintain the website Vegan Health which she calls “the most comprehensive, evidence-based source of vegan information on the internet.”  Ms. Messina has co-authored a number of books on vegan nutrition and vegan ethics, including Vegan for LifeVegan for Her, Never Too Late to Go VeganEven Vegans Die, and Protest Kitchen. Most recently she co-authored, with Jack Norris, RD, the second edition of Vegan for Life: Everything You Need to Know to Be Healthy on a Plant-based Diet (2020).

Ms. Messina was the featured guest speaker on RLMI’s Lifestyle as Medicine Lecture on May 16, 2021.
