Class 9 – Evolving Medical Paradigms: Moving the System Forward

Welcome to Class 9 of Jumpstarting Health: Foundations (formerly A Plant-Based Diet: Experiential Lifestyle Medicine Training for Clinicians).

Overview of Class 9: (1 hour) The Need for a Paradigm Shift: Our health care system is not living up to its incredible potential. It costs too much and accomplishes too little. As Albert Einstein said, “A clever person solves a problem. A wise person avoids it.” The focus needs to move from expensive problem-solving interventions to inexpensive treatments and problem-preventing programs (with better overall outcomes). But how do we get from here to there? After an examination of previous major paradigm shifts in medicine—involving handwashing, radical mastectomy, and gastric ulcer treatment—we will review what we have learned during the course and discuss ideas for moving the system forward. (Dr. Barnett)

Learning Objectives:

After completing this class, you will be able to:

  • Identify some of the problems in the current health care system.
  • Explain why a paradigm shift in health care is necessary.
  • Discuss how to move forward with problem-preventing programs that produce a better overall outcome.
  • Put into practice inexpensive treatments and problem-preventing programs to achieve better overall outcomes.
